My go to gift for expectant mothers is usually a cute lil outfit (because its so fun to shop for baby clothes!) And a pack of diapers, as diapers are always needed! :)
I always try to get more practical items.. diapers, wipes, baby wash/lotion.. they are not as fun to open but so expensive and can really help out new parents on a budget more than a ton of adorable outfits that are so much fun to buy... but maybe I'll get a really cute outfit to go with it if it's a good sale too. But generally, new moms get so many cute baby outfits.. I try to stay away from that unless the mom says she needs them more.

I usually get them something on their registry, however, I tend to get them bouncers or something along those lines.
